Ancestral Shrine
by Saihna Trollbane

This lore is created purely for those people that wish to participate more in depth in the Arathorian culture. Nothing that is written here is known truths, in fact most of it is fictional. This is however how some Arathorian think of their Religion. As such this is a bit more like a Bible then actual facts, and along with that, a Religious Arathorian may well be seen as fanatical if believing in all this. It is also known that many Arathorian take under the Religion of the Light, thus this is nothing strange to the Kingdom (and guild).

The Ancestors

The Ancestors are Arathorians who are long gone, passed away in battle, sickness, or of age. They await us in their halls to raise a mug to us, to let us join their grand feast. We ask for their guidance, for they have seen more in their final moments than we ever can in life. We honor them, for they gave their life's for our land. (This idea is much like the one from the Vikings and their gods, which is the whole point since our folk are a bit viking-like).

Some say this feast all the passed are invited to have gone on since the dawn of time, and some say it will continue as such for all eternity. While no one can ever know or validate such a thing, this is of no matters or worries once you pass to the ancestors. The feast is too grand for one to be bothered by anything else. Here one will eat from plates of the most delicious food which never seem to be finished. Drink the most sweet, refreshingly foamed mead one has ever tasted, which never seem to be finished in the wooden pints.

The joy one would feel is near overwhelming, and not of this world (you are dead, after all). You meet all the passed loves ones that you have come across in your lifetime, and others which you have only heard of in tales by the elders, or from ancient books. All you know is.. You are home, and with beloved kindred, brothers, sisters, friends.

While as the actual feast is never-ending, the Ancestors still has a few obligations. Not because they do so in their current state, but because as always, the ancestors has watched over their heirs, children and people. Every living arathorian has at least one guardian ancestor. This one will be connected with that arathorians mind at all times. While as this person will still be attendant to the great feast, he or she would instantly know if his or her ward was in danger or need of aid or guidance. At the feast, the ancestors constantly shimmer in and out from their seats, to go aid their wards when in need. This is so normal to the feast that no one take notice of it, ever.

At some times, an arathorian can have more then one ancestor, yet all these ancestors have each their own other wards. This usually occurs when an arathorian is of high rank, great importance, or will be so in the future. The ancestors would know after all, if a child is meant to do great deeds in their future. When this happens, it is called a Covenant of Ancestors, that are guarding this specific person. The person still has his or her special ancestor that is bound to him or her through mind. This is the ancestor that is the leader of the Covenant of this arathorian, as he or she is always in direct contact with the ward and is the only one to know when they are all needed.

Life after death?

So how does this place look like then? While as the outsides is of no greater matter to the epic feast inside, it is still uncomprehending for living people. When a faithful arathorian die, one that truly believe in the ancestral religion, he or she will wake up on a small wooden-boat. There is no one except the dying, on what seem an endless ocean. But then suddenly, the mist that seem to hide what might be other then water, fades slightly. One can see a massive, ancient castle, that is built right into an even more massive mountain, a mountain that seem endless in both length and height. The boat appears to lead right up to a platform, that is connected to a stair that leads up to the castle. While as it all seem a bit intimidating, there is a looming, calm feeling surrounding the whole place. And the skies is seemingly made out of pure Light.

After one has walked the stairs, opened the gates, one is met by warmth, music and the scent of food and mead. At a few meters distance one can see the short side of a table, that also seem endless right into the castle and mountain. The room itself is very dark, but lit up with countless of candles. The table has all sorts of food on it, and on the sides of it, benches with warm furs to sit on. And everywhere the benches are filled with ancestral spirits, all of them always making a big cheer at new arrivals. While as some ancestors seem to have trinkets, jewelry and noble features, they are all clad in the same furred robes, they are all equal to death and their new obligations.

While as there is food and drinks for everyone, as ancestor one has no longer the human instinct of hunger, thirst or others. This is, for the mortal after all. Yet, there is on the other side no feeling of ever being to full due to the food displayed on the grand table. There seem to never be too little to speak about either. The conversations held at the table keep going on and on, yet never to be boring at the end. Nor would anyone ever feel cold in their current state, nor too warm due to the furs and candles. On the walls one can see countless of paintings, of what seem to be battles. While some of the paintings are just that, paintings, others seem to have a spell or something on them. A repeating theme of the painting or its event. New paintings seem to occur every-now and then on the empty spots of the walls, seemingly of the current generations wars, heroic deeds and events.

About souls, honor and The Void.

In arathorian religion, souls and honor is vastly connected. Upholding your honor in life is the most important task, for if you spoil it your soul is no longer pure and you may risk your entrance in the Halls of the Ancestors. There are five dishonorable actions that is considered the worst, and that is the actions that slowly make ones soul impure. While as the three first ones are minor you will still risk the entrance to the Halls, and even if you get in you will be frowned upon on entrance.

Trifling audience with enemies, this mean that an arathorian meet, or speak with an enemy of Arathor without the back-thought of in the end destroy him. For it is considered a great act of cowardice to stand face to face with an enemy and not engage into combat, of either slaying the enemy or die trying.

Forsake allies of Arathor, this is an honor question no matter the situation. While as you may not agree with your allies in their actions, it is still your duty to protect and aid the in battle or time of need. This also regards even if they have not aided Arathor. For Arathor never sink to such level, even if only to prove a point (in which case it would actually also be an even more dishonorable act).

Stand down during war while not already injured, this is also very much frowned upon, and goes for all arathorians past the age of twelve. No matter sex, an arathorian has been taught in the ways of battle since birth, and while most of the true arathorians have a natural urge for battle, it is expected of all to fight to defend the lands, allies and friends at war. Rank, sex, or age matters not (unless as stated above under the age of twelve).

The fourth one, which is considered one of the worst acts, and that would with no pardon forsake your allowance to the Halls, is Murdering of a brother- or sister-arathorian, while as this does not include for execution of criminal arathorians, it is the first greatest act of dishonor in arathorian religion and society.

Fleeing due to cowardice in war, is considered an act of treason and unwillingness to aid your arathorian brethren, to protect your land and to uphold you honor. Thus if going through with this act, you are also with no pardon, not allowed in the Halls. Even if the odds are against an arathorian, he or she stand their ground and fight to their last breath, simply to either make sure their actions make a difference, or to secure and uphold their honor.

By going through with any of these actions above, you as said risk your seat in the great halls. Alas, as for the two last acts, and if you have committed more then two of the three first ones, you are not only not getting into the Halls of your Ancestors, but your soul is by this point so corrupted with dishonorable impurity, that you will be sent to The Void.

The Void, is the arathorians version of hell. While as it is no more or less what the name state; A void - you are still very conscious with the actual void around you, which makes it all the worse. You are doomed to sit in darkness, nay loom in it more like, for all eternity, regretting your wrongdoings forever. You have no way of connection to anything or anyone outside the Void, and while as more then one is sent there, there is no way of communication between each-others either. A soul that is sent to The Void, may however be redeemed by their descendants, but this is indeed a hard task, a task that can take a lifetime of one of the descendants to go through. Every person stand neutral at birth, this mean that even if an arathorians child's ancestral mother, father, grand-parents or any relative was indeed sent to the Void for their actions, the child is not affected by this, he or she create their own destiny for the afterlife.

Ancestral Authority.

At ones arrival at the Halls of the Ancestors, as stated above all of the ancestors wear the same garments. This is something that happens by default when you enter the Halls. Looking down upon oneself at entrance you are also wearing these simple skins. The arathorian ancestors whom were indeed the first ones to assemble all human tribes, do go back all the way to the vrykul, when they first wandered these southern parts of Azeroth. And as so, the oldest of ancestors seen in the Halls at the grand table, are quite huge men and women. As for the age when you enter the Halls, everyone take on the look of those each person had during their most glorious of days as alive (Which is usually around 25-30).

As the oldest of Ancestors stand Suxen, a man, more vrykul then human. Once more they all wear the same simple garments, however the longer an ancestral spirit has been, and the older this one is, he or she has a certain glow to their whole "body". It is as if through age they are slowly consumed with the Light (this is often where a believing arathorians beliefs often get mixed with the Light. However those arathorians that have a cleaved belief between ancestral religion and the Light often say that the Halls themselves are only existent within the Light, that its whole surrounding is a place within this afterlife).

Suxen is the greatest man of authority in the afterlife, as he is the one that was first to walk the plains of Arathi, in ancient times. However even as he is the one with them most authority, the coming descendants of him are not farm from his state. Every man or woman that is seen as an ancestral overhead, ancestral mother, or ancestral father, is nearly as consumed with Light as Suxen. They are each and everyone in charge of their line of descendants, and are the ones to choose people to Covenants when this is done. Once a Covenant is created, the head ancestor of it is promoted to an ancestral overhead also. This mean that some of the ancestors with the most authority, might not be as aging old as Suxen himself. But it is thanks to their passed life's struggle, honorable deeds and actions they are promoted, thus made overheads.

However, these authorities are only used on special occasions, as such when a Covenant is made, or when ancestral aid is needed in big events (most arathorians does not know it, but the ancestors come back to the plains of the living during war, to strengthen the descendants, some even enter the bodies of the warriors. This is sometimes seen as "fun",on the ancestors side, as they were passed warriors of war as well, they urge and miss the excitement of war and can amuse themselves by reliving it through their chosen descendant). However most of the time while the grand feast is ongoing, authorities matters not. Everyone is equal in death, and frankly the authorities are not needed during the feast.

The story behind the Halls of the Ancestors and the Void creature.

The known story about the Halls begins with Suxen. He was one of the children of vrykul that was said to have a curse bestowed upon them. Suxen was brought to the Eastern Kingdoms as infant, along with his brother Phelgas. They were those kind of twins that had no real resemblance, neither in looks or persona. Suxen was your average vrykul, only with the curse of being smaller (still vastly larger then todays human male). He was proud, honorable and fair. Phelgas was smaller then his brother, thin in an almost sick way. He did not seem to attract muscles as easy as your average vrykul. Ever since born he had seem different, silent, and at times his eyes shined of what looked like pure malice. He seemed to lack sympathy to all living beings, and only really cared of his own well-being.

Suxen and Phelgas was together with many other vrykul that seemed to carry the curse, moving through the Eastern Kingdom, until they found a place which seemed the most similar to the world they came from. Here they settled and created tribes, living on and creating their own families eventually. Even at this time they believed in a higher being then themselves, yet they could never express their beliefs proper. They believed that the souls of the passed lived on at some sort of plane, where they were beyond the sorrows and suffering of mortal flesh.

There was untold honors, that no one ever broke. Even if the tribes eventually split and found their own homes all across the lands, they all saw each others as brothers and sisters, always. For they had all come from vrykul father and mother, with a curse they yet knew not the meaning of. They respected the wildlife, and only took what was needed for their own survival, and they made sure to not disturb the balance anything more then necessary. It was years after their first arrival, when Suxen and Phelgas were young men, that Phelgas was seeming to take on a stand where as he cared not of these things. He took from the wild more then he needed, and he spoiled the earth and grass without giving it as much as a thought. Their tribe quickly grew sick of his malicious behavior, and cast him out, to go live on his own or find a new tribe. Even though Suxen knew his brother was who he was, he missed him dearly. In years to pass Suxen became some form of an overhead for their tribe. His family was large and he had far over twenty children, and throughout all the tribes in the lands, he became more and more known as a leader of their kin, a fair, kind and generous leader who did not want anything else then the best for his kindred.

It was told he did wonderful things to organize and aid his people. However, what became of Phelgas was always in his mind. He knew his brother was alive somewhere.. And he was right indeed. Phelgas, the uncaring he became known as. He heard of his brothers success, he heard how liked his brother was. Jealousy eventually made him explore his true capabilities. He recruited people out of the tribes, bribing them with treasures, and trained what seemed an army almost. The purpose was to take over, nothing more or less. He wanted to be seen as an overhead, like his brother. He wanted the power.. But knew not that the power, come from good souls that does not really want power at all, but only want the best for their kin. Around the brothers fiftieth birthdays, Phelgas would march out with his army, slay and torture tribe after tribe, until they obeyed him. And he kept doing this until he reached the tribe which was led by Suxen, his brother.

Suxen refused to give in to Phelgas madness, begged him to reconsider his actions and stop. But Phelgas would see no reasoning. They fought, the brothers, until they had both killed each others. The tribes lived on, and praised Suxen as a hero of their people, however, Phelgas legacy lived on also. He had ruined, corrupted the minds of the people..

Suxen and Phelgas were accompanied by each others at their death. They were both sat on a small boat that seemed to lead up to a castle, indescribably beautiful. By default, they entered the castle as the boat reached the plateau, up the stairs into a massive hall. Around a what seemed endlessly long table, massive vrykul men and women were sat, and all their attentions were turned to the entrance of the brothers. A man, that was sat close to the entrance, stood up. He seemed older then anything ever seen, yet it was incredible hard to see him, for he was almost completely consumed with light.

"Suxen, son of vrykul man and woman, your people will arise and create Kingdoms, heros and good in this world. You have shown us that you carry no curse, but a blessing. As such, you will be the beginning of our end. We are all old, Suxen. Our time as protectors are over, we are soon to become one with these halls, an eternal rest. You shall take our place, make sure your descendants keep on to your legacy of good and honor." The man put his massive hand on Suxens shoulder and smiled. Then he turned to Phelgas. "Phelgas, the uncaring. You are corrupt, your malice is the true curse. You have shown your people that evil can prevail, you have given them ideas that should not have been given. You are damned, and you will be for all eternities to come, until this world and all other worlds crumble into nothingness." The man pointed one finger at Phelgas, and while doing this it seemed as Phelgas was gradually disappearing in front of all their eyes, until he was gone. Suxen turned his gaze to the man that had done this, his sad look questioning without words. "He is to remain in what will be known as the Void. He belong not with us. His legacy will live on, evil and malice has corrupted your people now. And they will follow him, just as they followed his example. The Void will be their punishment."

Suxen then became the head ancestor, as his fathers and mothers as said disappeared, leaving the future descendants destiny of protection into his hands. His brother Phelgas, was the first to be cast into the Void. His hate and anger grew into unexplainable masses, to a point where he himself changed into creature more then humanoid. His malice and will to destroy grew, and with this he found ways to bend and control the Void to certain points. He became restless and wanted out, and as such he started to feed on the lost souls which were sent to the Void. Feeding on them in the belief that it would give him power, power that would grow until he would be able to get out of the Void and take over the worlds. The story of the Void creature, as they now called him was somehow found out by tribe-shamans and magicians whom had a certain, yet minimal access to the spirit-worlds. And the prophecy of the Void creature, that he would one day get out of his state, was told by mothers to their children to scare them into obedience. If it was actually a possibility, none really knew.. Not even Suxen himself.

About Ancestral obsession, it's virtues and laws.

Even as the feast in the great halls is nothing to even begin to compare to any other feast, due to its greatness, to some ancestors it is not enough. They still yearn for the mortality of flesh, blood, agony and war. It is an odd thing that usually really only occurs to those true arathorians that were truly dedicated to war at their very birth. As such, these ancestors often take control of descendants more then they are needed to. It is not forbidden, alas it is not recommended either. The ancestors keep strict rules to overtaking a descendants body. These rules contain for example free will of the descendant. If this is forsaken, and broken, an ancestor is beginning to risk his seat in the Halls. This rule means that an ancestor that take over a descendants body, need to have permission to do so. When his soul is consumed by the body, both their minds and souls are connected, and they may converse in mind with one another. If the descendant by this point refuse and want no part in being possessed, the ancestor must leave.

There is another rule that occur if an ancestor is agreed to possess the descendants body, and fail. This can of course happen, the ancestors may be cunning in battle, but alas, they are no Gods. If the descendant is killed while an ancestor is possessing, he or she will be given a punishment. in fact, the same punishment that might be seen as a blessing rather then a punishment to some. Rebirth. This means that the ancestors soul is sent down into mortal flesh of an unborn. He or she need to relive their life, not knowing or remembering the halls. So why is this a punishment? Well, naturally because being reborn, they risk their honor once more, because they relive the flaw of flesh and emotions, which can lead them into a path that would in the afterlife damn them to the Void. The fact this is seen as a blessing in some points, is because some ancestors does indeed want to live another life. Yet, they wouldn't know this once born again, their minds are stripped from that of the Halls. As for the descendant that died while being possessed, he or she himself get to choose if they wish to be reborn or stay within the halls (if they have kept their honor, that is).

The Voidsworn

"Phelgas, the uncaring. You are corrupt; your malice is the true curse. You have shown your people that evil can prevail; you have given them ideas that should not have been given. You are damned, and you will be for all eternities to come, until this world and all other worlds crumble into nothingness."

As is written, those who forsake honour in life are, in death forever forced to remain conscious within darkness in regret of those wrong doings committed in life - Those who are forever doomed to The Void. There are also those ancestors that are so committed to warfare from their birth who control the body of a descendant. Similarly, there are those who would wish to escape the torment of The Void perhaps to seek redemption, or otherwise just too simply wish to walk freely once more. Indeed, so strong is the 'will' of these souls that through great torment, and unspeakable pain to themselves that they do, indeed, escape The Void. This all but unbelievable act is thought to leave an open 'tear' on The Void however: Some believe that one day, through these openings that Void Creature itself will seep into the world while others see this as the work of the Creature with these souls being agents, unwilling, or otherwise to open this 'portal' into the mortal world.

These 'free' souls traversed the realms of the living for centuries and much like in The Void were unable to make contact with the living or other such souls - Indeed, this 'freedom' was little more than a new, all be it more 'expansive' prison for them to loom in.

The third generation of Death Knights, those who fell to the Scourge only to be raised in its service as elite shock troops found their apparent 'freedom' at the Battle of Light's Hope Chapel when their souls were 'reunited' with their bodies. This is common belief; however there are those Arathorian’s who see this 'rebirth' as something else. Amongst those counted amongst this latest generation of unholy champions there was many a Arathorian warrior (Or at least, in life) who’s souls never did reach the grand halls. Those who believe the tales of the 'Void-souls' claim that as these Death Knights came to consciousness during the final moments of the Battle of Light's Hope that these 'escaped souls' became one with the body of that desecrated Arathorian "Death Knight" in a twisted perversion of how an honoured ancestor would possess the body of a descendant.

Two and minds one, or even both of a disgraced soul connected within an unholy shell.

It is not known, or at least written what would become of an undead Arathorian once he or she undertakes a final rest, but the Void-soul's are well aware of that which awaits them and thus out of perhaps either regret, or desperacy they seek to atone for their crimes in their former life through their new connection however the 'proper soul' is still very much conscious and thus neither can truly control the other. A strange bond is formed between the two, with each aiding the other in this undeath so as to find a place within the Halls: The descendant continues his/her path of honour as they normally would in life while at the same time aiding the Void-Soul in its path to redemption upon the release of both. In turn, the Void-Soul aids the descendant through both mind and control of bodily functions whether this is out of genuine loyalty to the possessed, or to a means too an end.

After the formation of the Ebon Blade, these Arathorian "Death Knights" retained ties to the organization and did not break away entirely. Instead they sought to return to their homelands so as to aid and shed blood for their people as in life. This order came to be known as the Voidsworn.

Views regarding the Voidsworn, as with the Knights of the Ebon Blade in general, differ greatly. Some, or rather most view them with the same distrust or even hate as all undead who would 'aid' them while others see the Voidsworn as a greater, more honourable thing that a Death Knight, and indeed something of great strength; two 'Arathorian' aiding both their living brethren and each other in order to seek redemption and atonement for sins committed. There are of course those who see them on a more 'basic' level; the perfect, unstoppable killing machine in battle.

(This is how the list of the ancestors will look, much like in the population thread. Just copy-paste this list and fill it in while creating ancestors)

Name:
Nickname:
Age when deceased:
Monarch while alive:
Occupation in life:
Other info:

(The Other info, part, is for if the ancestor did something specific in life that was remembered by future generations. Of course all ancestors are special to someone as all of them is an ancestor to someone currently living. But remember, not all the ancestors were heroes or kings in their living lives. Don't forget to fill in some for the poor farmers etc also! This part can be a place for some small story also if that is something you have come up with for the character.)

Name: Suxen
Nickname: None
Age when deceased: Around his fifties
Monarch while alive: None
Occupation in life: Tribe-leader
Other info: One of the first known "humans" to walk the plains of Arathi. However as one of the first to come to the southern parts of Azeroth (more southern then Northrend), he was more vrykul then humankind.

Name: Arador Dawnweaver
Nickname: Hawkeye
Age when deceased: 80
Monarch while alive: Galen Trollbane -> Lordship of Stromgarde -> Saihna Trollbane
Occupation in life: Captain of Arathor
Other Info: A truly legend of our time, Arador Dawnweaver was the mentor to nearly all of the modern Arathorian Royals, the father of a Kingdom and one of the founders of a new Monarchy. He saw his fall during the assault of Tarren Mill. He fell defending the North, and is revered as a spirit of Victory, Strength, Honour and Compassion.

Name: Villior Sam'di
Nickname: The Harvester
Age when deceased: Disputed by Scholars
Monarch while alive: Thoradin
Occupation in life: Watcher of the Dead, Gravedigger
Other info: When the last breath leaves an Arathorian's body, it is said to be caught by the Harvester, a thin imposing character in dark clothes carrying a large yet delicate scythe. Although dark in appearance and cause, he is not evil, nor harsh. He leads our greatest warriors into the halls of the ancestors and misleads those who did wrong to their just reward. He wears the skull of the first man he harvested upon his face, and some say he may be appeased and dealt with to elongate the life of a dying man.
